TF who? What does TFP mean?
I’ve heard of TFP? But what does it mean?
You’ve probably heard the acronym TFP used in the
modelling/pinup community, but what does it mean?
TFP means Trade for Print. Back in the day the P stood for
print photographs, but thanks to modern technology it’s now digital files. This
is a term that essentially means no money is exchanged for services. It’s used when people are looking to
collaborate with creatives on a project, or are new to their field and want to
practice their craft. Everyone gives up their time as a trade for images that each
person can use to promote their work.
When you’re just starting out in the pinup community, it’s a
great way to increase your portfolio at low (no no) cost. You’ll find groups on
Facebook where people network for TFP, some recommendations will be included
below. This is a great way to meet photographers, makeup artists and hair
stylists to collaborate with. Again, remember that no one gets paid,
everyone is giving up their time on the guarantee that all creatives will be
credited whenever and wherever the images are shared. With TFP the photographer
owns the rights to the photos, so you need their permission before submitting
to magazines, printing, or selling the images. It’s a great way to get variety
in your portfolio, and as a pinup model, showing your versatility is essential.
The downside of TFP is that there’s no guarantee of the end
result, so make sure you do research before booking a TFP project. Look at the their
portfolio, understand that they may still be learning the same as you are, so
be patient as shoots can take longer than anticipated. Ensure you have an
agreed time and place to meet and be early (because if you aren’t early, you’re
late). If it’s your first time working with a creative, please take a friend,
maybe a fellow model who can also help with posing and offer encouragement.
At the same token, I want to emphasise how important it is
to book professional paid as well. Talented photographers are always touring
Australia, and if you’re lucky, Brisbane as well. TFP can be hit and miss, it
may take a few shoots to build your confidence and skill, but don’t let it get
you down. Booking with a professional
means you get guaranteed results, these shoots can cost anywhere from $200-$1000au
dollars, but are worth every cent, and have a higher chance of publication.
