Victory rolls made easy - the tutorial every pinup needs

Victory rolls are one of the most iconic pinup hairstyles, brought to popularity in the 1940s.
The term “victory rolls” originated with a fighter-plane maneuver that was used during World War II. Women adopted this name for the popular hairstyle to honor victorious soldiers. Someone say that it’s also because one of the most common victory rolls style is with two rolls pinned on the top of the head which form a “V” shape.

 Things you will need

  • sectioning comb
  • smoothing brush (similar to Denman)
  • hairspray (medium and strong hold/lacquer)
  • pomade - Uppercut Deluxe or Suavecita
  • bobby pins (matching your hair color)
  • hair flowers

Preparation

The night before please set your hair in curls with setting lotion and wrap in a polyester scarf overnight.

Gently remove curl clips and use a smoothing brush to softly brush curls underneath.

Section the top by placing your thumbs behind your ears, and drawing upwards to the crown of your head.  Don't worry if its not perfectly straight as the parts will be hidden at the back.  Put any hair not in the rolls into a pony tail at the back.

Roll 1 - Shape your victory roll by dividing your hair, if you want symmetrical rolls (parted in the middle) or use a side part for asymmetrical rolls (do the smaller roll first) starting at the back, and working the hair forward to shape the curl, pin the back of the roll and start creating and pinning the front of the roll.

Smooth the back and wrap the curl at the front into an "O" shape.  keep rolling and pinning the hair into itself until your get to the end.  Spray with a medium hold hair spray, holding the can at least 20cm away from your hair.  (Pro tip - use a medium hold hairspray when your still working with your style, and only use a lacquer when you have finished your style - then hit the wet hairspray with a warm hair dryer and it will set like concrete).

Roll 2 - Smooth the hair with a small amount of pomade on the underside of your hair, then softly run the curl through your fingers until its one big roll, this will make it loads easier to create that "O" shape.

Spray the top with medium hairspray and lightly back comb (ensure you don't backcomb the under section as this will be the top/visible part of your victory roll).

Dab some pomade on your comb and smooth any fly aways on the underside of your hair (this will end up being the outside of your roll).

Repeat the same process as roll 1, but if your doing asymmetrical remember this will be bigger than your first roll.

Manually roll/wrap your hair into the "O" shape and pin as you make each roll until finished. Now you can spray with a lacquer (20cm away from your hair) and set with a warm hairdryer.  Add some hair flowers and voila! Victory rolls in nine easy steps!
